Did you know that the temperature you use while sleeping can affect each stage of your sleep cycle? This is why it has been proven that people who sleep in warmer temperatures tend to experience a more shallow sleep pattern and often wake during the night. While on the other hand, those who choose a cooler temperature gain better sleep quality and are more likely to experience the deepest phase of sleep known as REM. Since REM sleep is the stage of sleep that results in the most restoration to the human body, it is safe to say knowing your optimal sleep temperature can play a huge role in experiencing a healthy sleep cycle. Join your Huber Heights Heating & Cooling family as we walk through some techniques for finding your optimal sleep temperature.
Have You Determined If You Are a Warm Or Cold Sleeper?
First, knowing whether you are considered a warm or cold sleeper will be helpful on your journey to find your perfect sleeping temperature. Once you have determined what kind of sleeper you are, you can make minor adjustments to boost your sleep quality. Typically, warm sleepers can fall asleep quickly. They don’t need to be covered in blankets. Warm sleepers find it more comfortable to wear less clothing or breathable, light pajamas for sleeping. Cold sleepers, however, are the opposite and like cozy items to send them off to dreamland. Fuzzy blankets, fluffy pillows, and warm pajamas are good examples of things a cold sleeper may utilize.
Have You Found Your Optimal Sleeping Temperature?
Now that you know what kind of sleeper you are, the next step is to adjust your bedtime temperature and adjust it to your own sleeping requirements. Perhaps you don’t have a set bedtime temperature you have been using consistently every night. If this is the case, it’s not a huge deal. As we discussed above, people are different. This is why there are cold sleepers and warm sleepers. Everyone has their own natural body temperature, so preference will certainly vary from person to person. So, where do you start? The National Sleep Association recommends that homeowners set their thermostats from 60-67 degrees. You can begin with a specific temperature, try it out for a night or two, and adjust accordingly until you settle on what works best for you. Remember that 60 degrees is on the very low end of that suggestion, but if it is a comfortable temperature for you, that’s all that matters. It will not, however, reduce energy consumption. And you will start to see your energy bill raised as a result.
Have You Considered Installing a Ceiling Fan?
By now, you might be sold on the concept of trying a few things to cool down your room so you can further catch some Zzzs in blissful slumber. The good news is that you can enhance your sleep quality by using a fan! Do you have a ceiling fan in your room? Maybe you do, and you haven’t put it to good use. If so, now is the time to start trying it out! If you don’t have one, now is also an excellent time to think about having one installed. Ceiling fans are great additions that help keep your room cooler and aid in better air circulation; plus, they help reduce energy consumption.
Have You Considered Installing a Smart Thermostat?
What about a smart thermostat? In today’s technology-prominent world, smart thermostats have significantly risen in fame over the past few years. They are easily accessible and affordable, and there are various options available on the market. Furthermore, using a smart thermostat is an energy-efficient way to operate your whole HVAC system from the convenience of your smartphone. In other words, when you’re chilling on the couch in the evening or already tucked away under your covers and feel the need to lower the temperature on your thermostat, you don’t have to get up to change it. Everything is easily accessible from your phone! In addition, you can also create a custom cooling schedule so that you don’t have to struggle with toggling between your daytime and nighttime temperature settings every day.
When working toward finding your optimal sleep temperature, have patience. All good things happen over time. Although it would be great to find your perfect temperature setting overnight, it might be one of those things that take time and experimentation. In the meantime, you can also look into helpful items that may promote deeper sleep, such as blackout curtains, weighted blankets, and high-quality sleepwear and bedding (i.e., silk, linen, and bamboo fabrics).
