HVAC PRECAUTIONS FOR A COZY CHRISTMAS

Christmas in Ohio is a magical time, with snowflakes falling outside and cozy holiday gatherings inside. Decorations are everywhere, adding to the whimsical holiday feeling. But amidst all the festivities, it’s important not to forget about the safety of your HVAC system. With so many items and decorations around, it’s easy to overlook where things are placed and how they affect your HVAC. So, just a friendly reminder from Huber Heights Heating & Cooling that taking some simple precautions can aid in ensuring a cozy and safe holiday season for you and your loved ones.

1. Avoid Placing Flammable Decorations Near Heat Sources

When you’re decorating for Christmas, it’s important to keep in mind that some things are flammable. So, just take a little extra care to make sure stuff like paper decorations, wrapped gifts, and blankets aren’t too close to heat sources like fireplaces or candles. We all love an open flame to help create a cozy ambiance this time of year, but let’s make sure nothing gets too close and creates a potential fire hazard. Also, if you do use these heat sources, don’t forget to properly put them out before you leave the house or hit the hay for the night.

2. Avoid Covering the Thermostat

As you decorate your home with festive ornaments and decorations, keep in mind where you place them. Make sure not to cover or block your thermostat. If anything is placed on, around, or in front of it, it can lead the thermostat to give inaccurate temperature readings. This can cause issues with your furnace and affect how heat is distributed in your house. So, it’s best to avoid putting anything near or in front of your thermostat.

3. Avoid Obstructing the HVAC Vents Clear

Another thing to keep an eye on is your HVAC vents. Sometimes, bulky items like the Christmas tree may cause obstructed airflow to your vents. When this occurs, it can confuse your furnace leading to a variety of HVAC issues, which is not something you want happening around the holidays.

4. Avoid Clutter Around Your Condenser

Even though your condenser (outdoor unit) is designed to handle tough weather conditions and isn’t in use right now, it’s still a good idea to take some precautions during winter. Keep an eye on the area around your condenser to make sure it stays clear of any loose debris like leaves, twigs, and outdoor items. You don’t want snow and ice with all that debris causing any damage to your unit. Plus, since the condenser isn’t used in winter, you might not notice any issues until spring. You can also consider using a condenser cover to give your outdoor unit some extra protection.
