Fall means something different for each family. Everyone has their own routines, hobbies, and schedule. But nonetheless, this time of the year is the back-to-school season for a large majority of people! Whether you have elementary-age kids, high school teens, or older kids in college, it’s sure to be a time of lots of preparations and planning to ensure a good school year and fall season for everyone. When fall hits, many people are caught up in new routines, fall festivities, transitioning their wardrobes, and planning for the new school year ahead. But as a homeowner, it’s vital you remember to keep your HVAC system included on your call checklist! The last thing you want to add to the chaos of the back-to-school season is a malfunctioning heating system. So, without further ado, join your Huber Heights Heating & Cooling as we guide you through prepping your HVAC system for the fall season.

Have You Scheduled Your Seasonal Tune-up & Safety Check?

First and foremost, if you haven’t already done so, we highly suggest you schedule your fall tune-up as soon as you are able to. Homeowners should get their furnace serviced once in the fall for its seasonal tune-up and safety check-up. This confirms everything is working correctly. In addition, our NATE-certified technicians perform a comprehensive examination to ensure that your furnace is still running in compliance with current safety regulations. After all, your well-being is of the utmost priority!

Have You Considered Investing in a Smart or Programmable Thermostat?

You probably already know, but the weather here sure is fickle. Back and forth it goes, choosing to bless us with its warmth and radiance once a day. Then deciding the very next day to surprise with a cool chill. You just never know what you’re going to wake up to – especially during this time of the year! You probably haven’t made a permanent shift over to strictly using your heating system yet. But pretty soon, you may find yourself turning your furnace on daily.

Keep in mind that even with the fluctuations in weather, it’s still crucial to reprogram your thermostat settings to accommodate for the change in weather. In addition, with the kids at school and fewer people in the house in the daytime, your HVAC system will not need to work as hard. Doing this may result in energy savings on your next bill. Smart or programmable thermostats are great for this purpose. They can be programmed to keep your home at a higher temperature at the times you and your family are away from your home and set to go back to a more comfortable temperature in the afternoons when everyone starts arriving back home.

Have You Changed Your HVAC Air Filter Recently?

It is recommended that air filters be switched out every 30-60 days. However, if your air filter isn’t supposed to be due for a new air filter just yet, it’s not a bad idea to start the back-to-school season off with a bang and proactively change your air filters beforehand. During the summer season, pollen, dust, allergens, and other airborne particles are notoriously unwanted house guests. Because of this, your air filter will have been exposed to these pollutants and become overloaded with them. Therefore, we tend to think that it’s best to be safe and change your air filters before your energy and time start getting taken up with all of life’s other requirements this next season.

Have You Cleaned the Vicinity of the Outdoor Compressor?

When leaves fall, and plants begin to die off in autumn, your backyard compressor is at risk. Be sure to clear the area around the machine of any debris or dead foliage. During the fall, high winds may pick up these loose particles and transport them into the compressor’s fan blades, causing your system to break down and create more difficulties later on. So, you should maintain a degree of awareness by checking this area throughout the fall and ensuring there are no obstructions around your outdoor unit. The last thing you want is an unreliable HVAC system along with all of your other back-to-school worries!

Have You Cleaned Your Ductwork & Air Vents?

The ductwork and air vents in your HVAC system play a vital role in distributing airflow to all areas of your home. If these components aren’t clean, they’ll eventually become clogged with dust and other particles. This build-up can make your HVAC system work harder and lead to bigger problems down the road. To get ready for the start of school, do a thorough home inspection to ensure that no objects or obstructions are preventing your vents from releasing air into the rooms. You should also make sure all of your vents are open. When ducts are closed, it can cause your system to malfunction. Furthermore, if you find that your vents are dusty, use your vacuum hose attachment and a mild soap and warm water solution if necessary to clean them.
